OREGON GOVERNOR RELEASES RECOMMENDED BUDGET FOR NEXT BIENNIUM

Oregon Governor Kate Brown announce her recommended budget and policy agenda for the 2021-23 biennium on Tuesday.

Brown says the proposal will prioritize the key challenges facing Oregonians, including addressing the impacts of COVID-19, recovering from the devastating 2020 fire season, and addressing racial disparities in the state.

In a statement Tuesday, Brown said “2020 has challenged Oregon in unimaginable ways. We have been tested to the core, and the most vital needs of Oregon families — health, safety, education, housing, and the ability to learn a living — have all been challenged in new ways.” She continued by saying “I have been awe-inspired by Oregonians who have stepped up at every turn to protect their friends, families and neighbors. The compassionate spirit of our state has shined through. Oregon has proven to be a port in the storm.”

Brown’s office says her proposed budget includes input from a Racial Justice Council that she formed this year, with the intention of working to dismantle systemic racism.

Despite a relatively stable revenue forecast outlined earlier this month, Brown has stressed that another federal stimulus plan is needed for Oregon and other states to face the enormous impacts caused by coronavirus.

The Governor’s budget proposal calls for federal funding to address a wide array of issues including the ongoing COVID-19 response, rent relief, unemployment insurance, small business help, and child care support.

Brown’s proposal outlines just over $100 billion in spending over the next two years, including $25.6 billion drawn from the state’s general and lottery funds.

A statement from Brown’s office says “Thanks to prudent spending and healthy reserves, Oregon remains in a healthy position to meet future challenges.”
