At a time when many Oregonians are impacted by the recent wildfires and the COVID-19 pandemic, the Oregon Public Utility Commission is promoting Oregon Lifeline.

A PUC release said Oregon Lifeline is a federal and state program that provides discounted phone or high-speed internet service to qualifying low-income households. The release said Oregon Lifeline is currently offering a monthly discount of up to $21.75 through the end of the year. That is a $9 increase over the usual discount. Oregon Lifeline also offers free cell phone and data service from Access Wireless, Assurance Wireless, and enTouch Wireless.

PUC Chair Megan Decker said the program helps eligible residents stay connected and provides access to emergency services, jobs, healthcare, education, and other vital resources. For some, Lifeline can mean the difference between having a social connection and complete isolation, according to the release.

Oregonians receiving benefits from select public assistance programs like Medicaid or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, may qualify for Oregon Lifeline. It is limited to one person per household for either the discounted or free service.
