In the KQEN Business Spotlight:
After 31 years in its current location, JCPenney’s in Roseburg will have its final day in business on Sunday.
Corporate Communications Specialist Susan Bryan confirmed the closure with News Radio 1240 KQEN. Bryan said the store, in the Garden Valley Shopping Center, opened in 1989.
Early in June the local store was put on a list of locations the struggling retailer would close, after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection the previous month. Other Oregon locations slated to close include stores in Salem, McMinnville and Bend.
JCPenney’s said it would remain the nation’s largest apparel and home retailer even after closing around 150 stores.
The Roseburg store was closed temporarily for COVID-19 precautions from March 18th until mid-June. Closing sales began on June 12th and some items are now up to 90 percent off the regular retail price. At last check the store is about half-empty, with items like clothing racks and other fixtures up for sale as well.
JCPenney’s is open daily through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Before closing forever, it will be open Sunday from 11:00 a.m.to 6:00 p.m.
The move leaves local residents with one less option for purchasing clothing and home retail items in Roseburg. Macys, Sears, and Kmart have all closed their Roseburg stores in recent years as well.
