The Oregon Department of Forestry is closely tracking 6 major fires in Oregon, down from 17 originally.
The update said five of the six fires have burned 100,000 acres or more. One of the massive fires, Lionshead, is the sixth largest fire of the past 100 years in Oregon. It is the only one of the major fires that showed any growth on Sunday- just 27 acres. The update said most fires posted double-digit gains in containment over the weekend.
Along with the Archie Creek Fire in Douglas County, the major fires include:
*Lionshead, 20 miles west of Warm Springs has burned just over 204,000 acres and is nearly 47 percent contained
*Beachie Creek, 15 miles north of Detroit has burned over 193,000 acres and is 59 percent contained
*Holiday Farm, 3 miles west of McKenzie Bridge has burned just over 173,000 acres and is 78 percent contained
*Riverside, 2 miles southeast of Estacada has burned over 138,000 acres
*Slater, 6 miles southeast of Cave Junction has burned over 44,500 acres and is 55 percent contained
Fires are removed from the list when they are 100 percent lined and fire managers are confident in their progress toward containment
The update said fire season is not over yet which means backyard burning and other restrictions are still in effect on ODF-protected lands.
