The Archie Creek Fire east of Glide has burned 130,429 acres and is 25 percent contained as of mid-day on Friday.September 18, 2020 2:30 p.m.
The Southern Area Red Type 1 Incident Management Team has taken over management of the fire. They are working with staff from the Douglas Forest Protective Association, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service.
On Thursday, the fire was most active on the south, east and northern edges. Those areas continue to be the focus. In the south, fire has backed down the slopes to Little River Road. Firefighters monitored that area and kept the fire from crossing the road. In the east, fire slopped over containment lines on Panther Creek Road in three places. Firefighters contained two of those areas and are working on the third one. Along the northeastern edge of the fire, operators of bulldozers and logging equipment are working to connect old logging roads for fire lines to protect threats to timber sales.
The update said fire mop up and improvement of fire lines continues throughout the fire, including the mop up of structures in and around Glide and Idleyld Park. Recent rain and humid air are allowing firefighters and heavy equipment to work closer to the fire’s edge to contain it. Improvement of fire lines continues along the 2500 road system at the northern edge of the fire at the upper drainages of Rock Creek, along the 600 road series in the southeast side of the fire, and where bulldozers and other equipment is working in the Hinkle Creek area at the northwest side of the fire.
Firefighters continue to take actions to keep the fire from spreading to structures. On Thursday, good progress was made in protecting the Wolf Creek Jobs Corp as the southern edge of the fire. Work continues to open Rock Creek access roads to Scott Mountain to protect communications equipment there.
North of Highway 138E in the Steamboat area, firefighters and heavy equipment continue to work along Canton Creek Road to Trapper Creek to build contingency fire lines in case the fire crosses primary fire lines.
1,094 people are assigned to the fire.
