CIRCUIT COURT HEARINGS CONTINUE

April 7, 2020 10:45 a.m.
Although the main part of the Douglas County Courthouse is closed, the Circuit Court for the county, as part of the Oregon Judicial Department remains open on the north side of the main courthouse building.
A release from Presiding Judge William Marshall and Trial Court Administrator Thomas Maxwell, said while some services are limited by order of the State of Oregon Chief Justice, other matters are occurring, with all precautions in place to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. The release said most hearings are taking place by telephone or video link. There are a few hearings that must take place with people in the courtroom. “Social distancing” precautions are taken with those required to attend. The release said the changes are in effect until at least June 1st.
The Trial Court Clerks office is open to take filings but it is preferred that people call 957-2400 if they have questions.
Each judicial day these hearings are still taking place:
*In-custody and out-of-custody criminal arraignments.
*Domestic Relation cases involving immediate danger to children.
*Abuse Prevention Restraining Order hearings.
*Juvenile Dependency Court
Treatment Court appearances are held remotely every week.
The release said so far it has been possible to avoid bringing jurors in for trials during this period, but it may become necessary to conduct a jury trial if it is constitutionally required. Prospective jurors should continue to call the jury phone line to get updates about jury service. Prospective jurors who are feeling sick or are in a higher risk category should contact the court to reschedule their jury service. The number to call is 957-2417.
In trials that are conducted, preventative procedures will be in place to further prevent the spread of the virus and to protect jurors.
