LIGHTNING FRIDAY LEADS TO SMALL FIRE ON DFPA LAND

August 11, 2019 7:30 a.m.
A lightening storm that moved over the southeastern portion of the Douglas District on Friday afternoon resulted in one confirmed new fire on Douglas Forest Protective Association lands.
Crews from the DFPA and the Canyonville South Umpqua Rural Fire Department responded to the report of smoke seen about 3 miles north of Canyonville, near North Gazley Road at about 6:00 p.m.
The North Gazley Fire was located burning at the bottom of a steep draw.
A helicopter was used to col the fire and prevent it’s spread while ground crews worked to contain the blaze.
The North Gazley Fire was stopped at about a quarter of an acre.
Crews remained on scene overnight to secure control lines and mop up hotspots.
The US Forest Service reported several small fire starts due to the lightning storm down in the Klamath National Forest before the system moved north into DFPA protected land.
