INCREASING FIRE WEATHER RISK THROUGH SATURDAY

August 9, 2019 4:00 p.m.
There is an increasing fire weather risk through Saturday for a wide area of southern Oregon and beyond, with a Red Flag Warning going into effect late Friday morning.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said another period of gusty winds and low relative humidity are developing in south-central Oregon as well as the Klamath and Modoc National Forest in California. Isolated thunderstorms are developing in northern Klamath and Lake counties and also in the Warner Mountains.
The Urgent Fire Weather Message said a strong system for this time of year will move up from the south on Friday and could bring frequent lightning on dry fuels late Friday morning through Friday evening. Thunderstorms are expected to produce little or no rain to start, then the chance for wetting rain is expected to increase Friday evening. Thunderstorms are expected to diminish in coverage and intensity west of the Cascades Friday night into Saturday morning. Thunderstorms will then increase in coverage again Saturday afternoon and evening, especially along and east of the Cascades.
The Red Flag Warning begins Friday at 11:00 a.m. and will continue through 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Abundant lightning on dry fuels is forecast for a number of areas. That lightning may produce numerous new starts that pose a threat to life and property and may overwhelm initial attack capabilities. However, wetting rainfall may occur under cores of thunderstorms.
The Red Flag Warning will be in place for Douglas County, most of Josephine County, all of Jackson County, south central Oregon, south east Oregon, and much of central Oregon, plus areas in northern California.
