Roseburg High School teacher Gwen Bartlett has been named Douglas Education Service District’s 2023 Regional Teacher of the Year.

The award comes from the Oregon Department of Education, in partnership with the Oregon Lottery. The awards are offered to honor exemplary educators in every region of the state. A release said candidates are exceptionally dedicated knowledgeable and skilled licensed public-educators in grades PreK to 12. 16 teachers have been selected from across the state of Oregon as 2023 Regional Teachers of the Year.

Bartlett is a social studies teacher. She was recently presented with the award and a $1,000 cash prize at a celebratory school staff meeting. RHS Principal Dr. Jill Weber said, “Mrs. Bartlett’s ability to ensure every student has a place and feels important while providing a learning experience that they will never forget is what we want for each and every student”. Weber said Bartlett has inspired countless students and changed numerous lives through her engaging instruction, caring heart for all students and her understanding of the students she teaches. Weber said “…In addition, she is an outstanding teacher, where she leads and mentors other teachers, both new and seasoned”. Weber said Bartlett is also very involved with student activities through advising numerous club’s and is the high school’s head track coach.

The release said Regional Teachers of the Year are nominated by students, colleagues, administrators, friends or family members to apply for the award, and are selected by a diverse panel of regional representatives. Later this fall, one of the Regional Teachers of the Year, will be named 2023 Oregon Teacher of the Year. The winner receives a $10,000 cash prize with $5,000 also awarded to their school.
