PEDESTRIAN HIT IN FREEWAY ACCIDENT

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in an accident on Interstate 5 southbound, just south of the Garden Valley Boulevard interchange, Saturday afternoon.

A report from Oregon State Police said at 12:30 p.m. the 74-year old stopped his pickup on the side of the road, and ran into traffic to retrieve a pocket-knife which had fallen off his vehicle. The SUV driver stopped immediately after the crash, called 911 and fully cooperated with the crash investigation. The pedestrian was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. He was transferred to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield where he is listed in fair condition at last check according to a hospital spokesperson.

Southbound traffic was backed up and slowed while emergency crews were on the scene.
