Unprepared drivers may face challenges through next week as a mix of winter storms are forecast for the Interstate 5 corridor and the Cascade mountain passes.

A release from the Oregon Department of Transportation said conditions may cause either delays or closures so drivers should remain flexible.

ODOT Interim District Manager Jeremiah Griffin said drivers are strongly urged to come prepared when traveling over the mountain passes, especially with more than a foot of snow forecast for the I-5 corridor between Ashland and Redding.

Griffin said drivers should have travel kits and make sure their vehicle is ready for driving including:

*Chains which they know how to install

*Tires with good tread

*Wipers that are clean and in good condition

*Working heater and defroster

When traveling drivers should have:

*Coats, hats and blankets

*No less than a half tank of gas

*Cell phone with a charger

*Water and snacks

*Medications

ODOT said motorists should not drive over their abilities. The wisest decision may be to wait until conditions improve.
