Out of an abundance of caution, the Douglas County Parks Department has temporarily closed and barricaded off the use of the covered pavilion/gazebo located within Charles V. Stanton County Park.

A release said after review and assessment, it was determined that the pavilion needed to undergo crucial and necessary structural repairs. The pavilion is expected to be closed until late spring in 2022.

The release said while the pavilion is a popular venue for weddings, reunions and gatherings, staff wanted to make sure it is safe and available for future events. Reservations for the pavilion have been temporarily suspended, and will not be accepted until after the repairs have been completed.

Stanton Park is located along the South Umpqua River, 1 mile north of the City of Canyonville, on Stanton Park Road. It opened in 1962 and was officially named in honor of Charles V. Stanton, editor of the News Review at the time, at a dedication ceremony a year later. Stanton was instrumental in the establishment of the Douglas County parks system in 1950. At the time the park opened, 30 of the 36 counties in Oregon had adopted the same guidelines to implement similar county park systems.
