On Tuesday, voters in Harney County voted heavily in favor of a measure placed on the ballot by petitioners for the Greater Idaho movement.

The movement seeks to shift the Oregon/Idaho border to add eastern and southern Oregon counties to Idaho.

Organizer Mike McCarter said 63 percent of those voting favored the idea with 37 percent opposed. Greater Idaho was the only county-wide issue on the ballot in Harney County, and there were no statewide races. McCarter said turnout in Harney County was 70 percent higher than the statewide average for this month’s special elections.

McCarter said Greater Idaho has enough signatures to get the issue on the May 2022 ballot in Douglas and Klamath counties. Citizens are still collecting signatures for the movement in Curry, Josephine, Morrow and Umatilla counties. McCarter said in Coos, Crook, Gilliham, Wheeler and Wallowa counties the organization is asking citizens to contact their county commissioners, asking them to put an advisory question on the ballot. He said the organization also wants supporters to contact their state legislators now.

A release said a poll released Monday shows that voters in Idaho are strongly in favor of adding these counties into Idaho. A June poll found Oregonians undecided on the issue.
