The Devil’s Knob Complex has grown by 1,450 acres, and is listed at 38,387 acres as it burns on the Tiller Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest.

An update from the Florida Red Incident Management Team said fire growth has occurred primarily on the Smith Fire on the northeast flank in Slick Creek and on the northwest flank in Straight Creek. On the southeast flank, green interior islands continue to burn and spot. Although the fire is active in these areas, it has generally been moderate.

On the Smith Fire, crews continue to remove brush on the outskirts of Ash Valley down to Forest Road 27 in continued efforts to protect private property and structures. Crews made progress with direct lines on the southeast flank in the area of Forest Road 800 and the footprint of the Buckeye Three Fire from 2013. Strategic firing operations continues on the northeast flank in the Straight Creek area as well as some direct line construction west of Smith Ridge to reduce the size of future firing operations.

On the Big Hamlin Fire, firefighters are making good progress with firing operations on the east side near Whiskey Camp, taking a slow deliberate pace to keep the fire’s impact minimal. Firefighters are continuing with strategic firing operations on the east and northeast flanks and continue to hold lines and mop up from the southeast around and up to the northwest flank.

Containment on the Devil’s Knob Complex has risen slightly to 28 percent.
