Fire behavior moderated on Tuesday morning in the Devil’s Knob Complex of fires, on the Tiller Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest.

An update from Northwest Incident Management Team 8 said the help came from a marine layer that moved into the Complex area, allowing firefighters to assess the results of Monday afternoon’s fire growth. Fire activity picked up significantly by afternoon in the area of growth that occurred Monday. Meadow Spike Camp was dismantled and all resources were relocated to the main camp near Milo.

The update said on the largest fire, the Big Hamlin Fire, burning in nearly 9,400 acres, fire is staying within the indirect containment line to the east. The west flank is holding and good progress is being made on mop up operations. Construction continued on the indirect containment line to the east.

On the Smith Fire, burning in just over 2,800 acres, fire spotted across to the east side of the South Umpqua River on Tuesday. Heavy equipment was mobilized to work on the spot, which is approximately 100 acres.

The Devil’s Knob Complex remains at just under 13,700 acres, and 15 percent contained.
