FIRE BEHAVIOR INCREASES ON DEVIL’S KNOB COMPLEX

August 17, 2021 4:00 am.

Fire behavior increased Monday afternoon on two of the larger fires in the Devil’s Knob Complex.

An update from Northwest Incident Management Team 8 said the Big Hamlin Fire and the Smith Fire were impacted by the combined effects of full sun under clear skies, gusting west winds and low relative humidity coming into alignment during the peak afternoon burn window. The update said Meadow Spike Camp will be dismantled and all resources will be returning to the main camp at the incident command post on Tuesday evening. The total number of fires has now been reduced to 11 as a result of containment and control efforts and the merging of larger fires.

The complex remains 15 percent contained and burning in 8,238 acres, with most fires burning on the Tiller Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest.
