Firefighters assigned to the Mehl Creek Fire made good progress overnight, working to contain the blaze.

Kyle Reed of the Douglas Forest Protective Association said bull dozers and hand crews working on the incident completed fire lines around approximately 80 percent of the fire overnight and started installing hose around the perimeter of the fire. It is burning in steep terrain about three miles southwest of Elkton. It is burning in steep terrain about three miles southwest of Elkton and is estimated to be between 150 and 200 acres.

Reed said 115 firefighters are assigned to the incident along with four water tenders, two bull dozers, a fixed wing recension aircraft and two helicopters. Crews are working to complete fire lines around the northern portion of the fire in addition to holding and improving existing fire lines around the remainder of the fire.

Reed said no homes are threatened by the Mehl Creek Fire and no evacuation orders have been issued. Residents in the area are advised to stay informed about the fire as conditions can change rapidly during wildfire situations.

DFPA is being assisted on this incident by resources and personnel from local rural fire departments, the Coos Forest Protective Association, Oregon Department of Forestry, industrial landowners and contract resources.

Reed said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
