One person has died, and three people were hurt in a three-vehicle crash on Monday afternoon.
Sergeant Brad O’Dell of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said at about 4:50 p.m. dispatchers began receiving reports of the wreck in the 3100 block of Highway 99 South, near the Green District. O’Dell said deputies arrived on the scene and learned that a sedan, driven by 43-year old Kyle Northern, had been traveling north on Highway 99 when it drifted into the oncoming lane and sideswiped another sedan, driven by 72-year old Colleen Bendan of Winston. O’Dell said the first vehicle then collided with an SUV operated by 65-year old William Metcalf of Roseburg.
Northern was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger in the first vehicle, 31-year old Elizabeth Calvillo-Hawelu, was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center by ambulance. Metcalf was also transported to Mercy with non-life-threatening injuries.
O’Dell said Bendan sought medical attention at the hospital by private vehicle. She was treated and released according to a hospital spokesperson.
The roadway was closed for approximately two and a half hours.
DCSO was assisted by Douglas County Fire District No. 2, Umpqua Valley Ambulance, Winston-Dillard Fire District, Winston Police, Oregon State Police, the Oregon Department of Transportation and other agencies, at the accident scene.
