March 10, 2021 3:30 p.m.

The suspect in a recent homicide in Springfield has been identified as one of two people involved in a lengthy stand-off with authorities in Reedsport on Tuesday night that ended when shots were fired and one of the individuals stopped by police, died.

A release from Springfield Police said they are no longer seeking a suspect for the homicide of Richard Marshall. The 70-year old was found deceased March 1st at Food for Lane County’s Youth Farm, where he was a volunteer caretaker.

The release said their investigation led SPD detectives to several coastal towns in the last few days with the suspect being found in Reedsport. The investigation involved several agencies including the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Reedsport Police, and Coos Bay Police.

Sergeant Daniel Allen from the Roseburg Police said during the traffic stop one individual was detained while the other became hostile.

Detectives with the DCSO Crisis Negotiations Team negotiated with the armed suspect for several hours, attempting to de-escalate the situations. Shots were fired at about 10:45 p.m. and the second suspect, whose name is being withheld at this time, was pronounced deceased by medical personnel.

Whether the suspect in the homicide is the person who died in the officer-involved shooting, or the person detained, has not been released.

Allen said the Douglas County Major Crimes Team was activated for the investigation. Further details are expected on Thursday. RPD is the lead agency for the Major Crimes Team.
