OREGON – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is alerting pet owners about a food recall after 28 dogs have reportedly died and 8 more are reported to be ill nation wide.

Multiple product samples of Sportmix pet food were tested by the Missouri Department of Agriculture and found to contain very high levels of aflatoxin.

Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by a type of mold and, at high levels of ingestion, can cause illness and death in pets. The toxin can be present even if there is no visible mold.

Pets with aflatoxin poisoning may experience symptoms such as sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice, and diarrhea.

According to the FDA, in some cases, this toxicity can cause long-term liver issues and death.
