POSSIBLE WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS IN MOUNTAIN AREAS

November 5, 2020 3:20 a.m.

Drivers in southwest Oregon should get ready for winter weather driving conditions in the cascades and on the mountain passes of Interstate Five.

A release from the Oregon Department of Transportation said a change to seasonal, wet and cold conditions is forecast by this weekend. The release said pavement dirt and grime will surface on area highways causing slick conditions, especially on mountain passes such as Interstate Five north of Grants Pass.

Those driving in winter conditions should:

*Slow down and don’t use cruise control in wet, icy or snowy weather

*Choose main routes, don’t rely on GPS systems, and be rested and alert

*Always wear a seat belt

*Drive with the lights on and reduce the speed of the vehicle

*Use extra caution when driving on bridges or concrete highways as ice forms first on those surfaces

*Carry chains and know how to install them, or use traction tires
