The driver in a fatal accident on Saturday is now facing manslaughter and other charges.
A report from Oregon State Police said the wreck took place at about 5:15 p.m. on Highway 38, two miles west of Elkton. An investigation revealed that an SUV driven by 40-year old Jose Torres of Van Nuys, California was westbound when it left the highway, traveled down an embankment and rolled.
The passenger, 46-year old Alfredo Valdez-Perez of an unknown location, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. Torres was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield.
On Sunday, Torres was released from the hospital and booked into the Douglas County Jail. Charges include first-degree manslaughter, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving, driving under the influence of intoxicants, and third-degree assault. Bail was set at $447,500.
