A report of shots being fired along Highway 38 east of Reedsport on Friday morning, turned out to be a very different situation than originally thought.

Around 7:00 a.m. reports started coming in to dispatchers that someone was shooting at passing vehicles. Gunshots were heard and someone was seen on foot in the area.

Information from OSP said it was eventually determined that the person on foot, was simply out for a walk. The gunshots were instead .22 caliber ammo that had spilled on the road. Lieutenant Cord Wood of OSP in North Bend said the ammo would detonate when vehicles drove over it. Wood said “it sounds very strange, but I saw it happening”.

Staff with the Oregon Department of Transportation sent a sweeper to clear the area.
