A Grants Pass man has been arrested for the rape of a juvenile, following his release from Mercy Medical Center.

Sergeant Brad O’Dell of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said on Saturday September 5th, deputies were dispatched to a reported rape of a juvenile which occurred in Canyonville. O’Dell said deputies secured the scene and contacted detectives who took over the investigation.

The suspect, 43-year old James Smith was transported by ambulance from the scene and has been hospitalized since the alleged incident occurred.

On Saturday, Smith was discharged from the hospital and then was taken into custody. He is being held on first degree counts of rape and sexual abuse. Bail was set at $625,000.
