Crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association, the Winston-Dillard Fire Department and Douglas County Fire District No. 2 dealt with a fire along Highway 42 on Monday afternoon.

Kyle Reed of DFPA said a bird into the power lines sparked the grass fire, three miles southwest of Winston near the 2,000 block of Highway 42. Firefighters arrived on the scene at approximately 5:20 p.m. and reported that a quarter of an acre was burning in a previously mowed field. Reed said strong winds fanned the flames while aviation and ground resources worked to extinguish the blaze. The forward spread of the fire was stopped at two acres, in about fifteen minutes.

One crew remained on the scene of the Highway 42 Fire until around 7:00 p.m.
