ROSEBURG MAN JAILED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER IN FREEWAY SHOOTING IN JACKSON COUNTY

August 21, 2020 10:15 a.m. (updated at 2:30 p.m.)

A Roseburg man has been jailed for attempted murder and other charges in connection with a freeway shooting on Wednesday.

A report from Oregon State Police said 49-year old Kenneth Ayers is also the suspect in a series on shootings on Interstate Five that have occurred since late May. Captain Tim Fox of OSP told News Radio 1240 KQEN that the suspect is a driver for United Parcel Service, who is based in Roseburg.

Wednesday night at 9:45 p.m. OSP troopers and emergency personnel responded to Interstate Five north of Medford for a report that a motorist had been shot. A preliminary investigation revealed the woman was headed northbound when she was struck with a bullet. She was transported to a hospital, where she was treated and released for her injuries. The report said OSP has reason to believe this shooting is linked to previous shootings along Interstate Five, that have taken place in Douglas, Josephine and Jackson counties.

Ayers is also held for second degree assault, seven counts of unlawful use of a weapon, seven counts of second-degree criminal mischief, and thirteen counts of recklessly endangering another person. Ayers is being held on $352,500 bail.

District attorneys from Douglas and Josephine County are working with the Jackson County DA’s office. Additional charges will be presented to a Jackson County Grand Jury.

Anyone with information regarding any of the shootings is asked to contact the OSP Southern Command Center at 800-442-2068.
