Wildland firefighters continue to respond to smoke reports on the Umpqua National Forest.
Mark Turney of the Forest Service said crews started hiking into the Theilsen View Wilderness on Wednesday. A fire was contained to 1/10th of an acre on Wednesday night with work on it continuing on Thursday.
Turney said detection flights are being conducted. He said it’s not uncommon to experience “hold-over” fires several days after a lightening event.
The UNF release said the Northwest Fire Potential Summary shows hot, dry and unstable conditions will keep fire danger indices above average through Saturday before moderation begins from cooling over the weekend.
Turney said fire managers say as the high temperatures continue, fuels such as grass and forest duff will continue to be dry and be receptive to any ember or spark to start a new fire. Residents should use caution while working or recreating outdoors.
The Umpqua National Forest remains at a Moderate fire danger rating and a Personal Use Restriction level 1.
