Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association responded to a new fire Wednesday afternoon at Interstate Five milepost 92 southbound.

Kyle Reed of DFPA said crews arrived on the scene shortly after 5:20 p.m. and reported the fire was 1/10th of an acre in size. Reed said a helicopter was used to drop buckets of water on the fire while crews dug hand line around the blaze. The Milepost 92 Southbound Fire burned a quarter of an acre of wildland fuels before crews contained the fire. Reed said crews remained on the scene until shortly after 12:00 a.m., mopping up hot sports and securing control lines.

A 20-person hand crew and a water tender that were assigned to Tuesday’s Milepost 92 Northbound Fire were pulled from that incident to assist with the new fire. Additional resources from the Azalea Rural Fire Department, the Canyonville-South Umpqua Fire Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation responded to the incident.

Reed said the cause of the Milepost 92 Southbound Fire is under investigation.
