ODOT URGES DRIVERS TO MOVE OVER

A release from the Oregon Department of Transportation is asking drivers to “move over” for all vehicles on the side of the road that are showing lights or distress.

The release said with construction season in full swing, drivers know that when they see orange barrels, cones or signs, they are coming into a work zone and need to slow down. However not everyone seems to know about Oregon’s Move Over law.

The release said drivers must move over to a non-adjacent lane, or slow down to at least five miles per hour under the speed limit, when approaching the rear of any vehicle that is stopped and displaying warning or hazard lights, or otherwise indicating distress, not just emergency vehicles.

The ODOT release said maintenance crews, utility companies and others are often working alongside the road with warning or hazard lights on. This should also signal that motorists need to move over.

The fine for violating the Move Over law is $265. It increases to $525 if the location is within a safety corridor, school zone or work zone.
