One man is dead and one is hospitalized after a rollover accident early Thursday morning.

Sergeant Jeff Eichenbusch of the Roseburg Police said at around 2:00 a.m. emergency personnel responded to the wreck in the 1600 block of Southeast Pine.

Eichenbusch said a southbound vehicle was reportedly driving at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway, struck the guardrail and went airborne. The location is where Highway 99 turns into both Pine and Stephens streets. Eichenbusch said the vehicle landed upside down on a lower access road, trapping both occupants inside.

The passenger, 25-year old Jacob Bickell of Myrtle Creek, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver, 21-year old Michael McCollum, was transported to Mercy Medical Center for severe injuries he sustained in the accident. He was later life-flighted to Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield for further treatment. He was listed in critical condition at last check, by a hospital spokesperson.

Oregon State Police assisted in the investigation by conducting an accident reconstruction. Eichenbusch said driver impairment is suspected in the case and the investigation is ongoing.
