June 23, 2020 3:25 a.m.

Covering coastal Douglas County:

For the 8th year in a row, the Reedsport Volunteer Fire Department will not issue burn barrel or debris burning permits within the city limits for the duration of fire season.

A release said there will be no exception to the policy.

The department will stop issuing permits on Wednesday at the same time the Coos Forest Protective Association begins fire season.

The release said the policy will be in place in order to:

*Protect the welfare of the community

*Reduce the cost of fire operations

*Align with neighboring fire protection agencies

*To provide for firefighter safety

Warming fires, such as campfires or recreational fires are still allowed except during times of extreme fire danger. Residents should burn clean, dry fire wood, never leave a fire unattended, put it out completely when finished and be aware of the smoke its creating in the neighborhood.
