Wind and debris burning is not a good combination, according to officials with the Coos Forest Protective Association.
Jef Chase at the CFPA said the weather has been moderate for their area so far. Chase said June normally comes with high winds. The CFPA release said southern Oregon is at the time of year where small debris piles that will burn up completely in a day are safe to burn. Large piles, such as ones that have been built with machinery, that are going to hold heat for days or weeks are not a good idea to burn just ahead of summer. Chase said these piles are best left for fall and winter times when rainy conditions are back.
High winds are one of the leading causes of escaped debris burns. The release said CFPA encourages people to finish cleaning up their property responsibly before the fire season gets here.
