A popular summertime concert series in Roseburg, is now officially cancelled for this year.
Clint Newell, one of the longtime organizers for Music on the Half Shell, told News Radio 1240 KQEN that the season will not take place, due to the current public restrictions. Newell said “at this time we’re unable to schedule concerts with any certainty”. He said “therefore we elected to suspend Music on the Half Shell concerts until next year”.
Newell said the committee is working with Brooke Communications to put together a weekly radio show to highlight the past 28 years of Music on the Half Shell. General Manager Rachelle Carter said it will run every Tuesday night on Best Country 130 starting June 30th and going through August 25th. Carter, a former emcee and committee member for the concerts, will host the program and play artists from past Half Shell concerts and include interviews with bands, committee members and crew, fans, sponsors and others. More details will be announced later.
The series began in 1992. Dick Nichols had the original vision for the concerts while he was a member of the City of Roseburg Parks and Recreation Commission. He worked with Newell, the Parks Department and others to get the series started. Half Shell began with five regional groups the first year, eventually moving to an eight-concert series. It has featured groups from around the world, of various musical genres. Five years later, Nichols, who was a Winston resident, began the Riverbend Live! concert series in that community, along with his wife Mo. Nichols passed away last year.
This would have been the 29th year for Music on the Half Shell concert series.
