The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians will receive a federal nutrition and supportive services grant, according to an announcement from Oregon’s U.S. Senators.
Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden said tribal communities in the state will get over $430,000 to support the needs of elders and in an effort to curtail the spread of coronavirus.
That funding is being allocated by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, better known as the CARES Act.
Merkley said the coronavirus poses unique risks and challenges to elders in communities across Oregon, and some of those challenges are felt the hardest among tribal communities.
Wyden said tribal elders throughout Oregon facing COVID-19’s health dangers and economic uncertainties “urgently need support to get through this historic crisis”.
The money will fund meal delivery and supportive services for Native American elders and is being distributed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The Cow Creek Band is set to receive just over $54,000 of the funding. The remainder of the grant is going out to five other tribal groups.
