A Tigard man was detained on stolen vehicle charges by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday.
A DCSO report said at 9:30 a.m. a deputy saw a vehicle pull into the Canyonville Burger King and determined that it was stolen. The deputy followed the Jeep as it got onto Interstate Five headed southbound and waited for another unit to catch up. The vehicle was then pulled over eight miles south of Canyonville.
The driver and a passenger were ordered out and detained. 36-year old William Sargent admitted to stealing the Jeep, according to the report. He said he was trying to get to California with it. He said the passenger was a hitchhiker he had picked up near Cottage Grove. She confirmed that story.
Sargent was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, and for a warrant which was out for his arrest from the Oregon Parole Board. He was detained without bail. The woman was given a courtesy ride to Canyonville Truck & Travel.
