The 10th annual Discover Roseburg / Land of Umpqua Geocache Series kicks off on Saturday February 1st.
A release from the City of Roseburg said modern day treasure hunters will get to explore many sites in and around the Roseburg area and can ultimately end up with the prize – a limited edition, 10th anniversary Geocoin. Only 200 coins are made for the event.
The event is organized by the Roseburg Parks and Recreation Department and begins at 9:00 a.m. inside the Roseburg Public Library. Participants receive a passport, which lists the coordinates to five traditional and 15 virtual caches. The passport asks a question at each location to verify that the participant has found the correct location. The event concludes at 2:00 p.m. at the Ford Room of the library.
Parks Manager Kris Ammerman said the goal is for visitors to have so much fun that they want to revisit Roseburg.
The release said geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity in which participants use a GPS receiver or mobile device to hide and seek containers, called “caches” at specific locations marked by coordinates. Originating in Oregon in 2000, geocaching has grown to become a popular worldwide outdoor activity.
Ammerman said visitors from “all over the region” come to participate in the event. He said the activity draws in people who have never been to Roseburg. Ammerman called the economic impact, “impressive”. He said it also brings people to the area to visit businesses during an otherwise slow time of the year.
