A presentation regarding ranked-choice voting will be featured in a meeting led by the League of Women Voters of Umpqua Valley, on Tuesday night.
Information from the local group, said when more than two candidates are in a race, ranked-choice voting allows voters to vote their true choices without fear of splitting the vote. That means that one election will suffice and there is no need for both a primary and a general election. The vote counting process results in an instant runoff and a winner with majority support.
Ranked-choice voting is used in some U.S. cities and in the state of Maine. Citizens of Benton County in Oregon will use it this fall in general elections for the county offices of sheriff and commissioner.
Barbara Klein from the League of Women Voters of Rogue Valley will be the speaker. She will simulate a ranked-choice election, answer questions and discuss local options.
The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Deer Creek Room of the Roseburg Public Library. Call 672-1914 for more information.
