MAN JAILED FOR ASSAULT

January 15, 2020 10:40 a.m.
A Saginaw man was jailed for assault by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, following an incident on Monday night.
A DCSO report said at about 6:30 p.m. a 911 call was received indicating that a man was bleeding from his neck in the 100 block of Bear Creek Road in Curtin. The victim said an unknown man had held a knife to his throat and beat him up.
The victim said the suspect, later identified as 61-year old Joseph Penland, pounded on his trailer door and when he answered, grabbed him by the shirt, causing it to rip. The victim said the suspect then punched him in the face and at some point, put a knife to his throat and said he would cut him with it. The victim said he was eventually stabbed in the neck. The victim was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield to be treated.
The report said the suspect later called in from Lane County and said he wanted to speak with police. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office contacted the man, who had a small stab wound to his shoulder, but refused medical treatment.
A deputy from DCSO arrived later and also interviewed the suspect. He claimed the trailer was his, and had asked the man inside to come out. Penland said that man grabbed his shirt and stabbed him in the throat.
The report said Penland’s statement varied from what he had initially had said. The victim denied ever using a knife against Penland and provided consistent statements throughout the investigation.
Penland was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with second degree assault, and for unlawful use of a weapon. He was initially detained on $75,000 bail.
