A Roseburg man allegedly driving a stolen vehicle was arrested after a police chase on Saturday.
A report from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said at around 3:30 p.m. a deputy spotted the vehicle as it passed him on Northwest Edenbower in Roseburg. As the deputy gave chase, the vehicle pulled onto Sweetbriar and attempted to turn around. When the deputy activated the lights on his vehicle, he continued to pursue it as it drove in reverse up Sweetbriar. The report said the vehicle made it to top of the street, then got past the deputy, as the sedan headed back towards Edenbower.
The vehicle continued south on Edenbower through Stewart Parkway where the deputy lost sight of it. It was located a few minutes later, crashed behind Walmart near the loading dock area. It was unoccupied when it was found.
A 23-year old passenger was found walking in the area. A short time later the suspect, 40-year old Matthew Kelm, was found running through a wooded area behind Walmart. Kelm was taken into custody and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, eluding in a vehicle and on foot, driving while suspended and for reckless driving.
The stolen sedan was recovered.
