A Winston man was arrested after a police chase on Friday.
Sergeant Brad O’Dell of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at about 12:15 p.m. a deputy saw a vehicle that had been previously reported stolen pass by his location on Roberts Creek Road. O’Dell said the deputy turned around and attempted to stop the vehicle, at which time the driver accelerated and led deputies on a pursuit.
An officer from the Roseburg Police Department was able to successfully deploy spike strips on the vehicle near Dixonville. Despite the strips, the suspect identified as 32-year old Eric Lorenz, continued to attempt to elude deputies as he headed towards Glide on Highway 138W.
O’Dell said by this time the driver was operating the vehicle only on the rims. In order to end the pursuit, a deputy eventually performed a Pursuit Intervention Technique maneuver. That’s where a patrol vehicle can force a fleeing vehicle to turn sideways abruptly by hitting it from behind, forcing it off the road.
Lorenz was detained and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, attempt to elude, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, and for a parole violation. After arraignment, he is detained on $25,000 bail.
O’Dell said any motorists who witnessed Lorenz driving in the wrong lane of travel, are asked to call DCSO at 440-4471.
Oregon State Police, Roseburg Police, and the United States Forest Service Law Enforcement assisted DCSO in the incident.
