K9 NIKE CATCHES SECOND VEHICLE PURSUIT SUSPECT IN FOUR DAYS

September 24, 2019 10:10 a.m.
Roseburg Police K9 Nike caught his 2nd vehicle pursuit suspect, in four days, on Monday.
Information supplied by the Roseburg Police and by the Myrtle Creek Police said at 6:00 a.m. K9 Nike was called out to assist the Myrtle Creek Police in tracking a vehicle pursuit suspect.
A Myrtle Creek officer had tried to stop the vehicle because a records inquiry showed the vehicle’s registration had expired, but it had 2020 tags on it. The officer initiated the traffic stop about three miles north of Myrtle Creek on Interstate Five but the vehicle failed to yield and continued north reaching speeds up 80 miles per hour. The vehicle exited the freeway about two miles later and headed up Kent Creek. It crashed after approximately five miles.
The driver, identified as 28-year old Matthew Bay, exited the vehicle and ran down a hill. The officer chased Bay on foot for approximately 300 yards before the suspect stopped running and hid in the bushes. Nike arrived and located the man hiding in a log jam 75 yards further down the hill. The report said the suspect had been given multiple warnings but did not surrender. Nike performed a biting capture on Bay.
Bay was medically cleared for the dog bite and other injuries he received from the crash and from running.
Bay was arrested for two felony warrants along with new charges of attempting to elude and for reckless driving. He was detained without bail.
