SUSPICIOUS ITEM FOUND NEAR WOOLEY CENTER CHECKED BY EXPLOSIVES UNIT

A suspicious item was found near the Woolley Center on West Harvard in Roseburg Friday night, resulting in the Explosives Unit from Oregon State Police being called in and surrounding buildings being evacuated, including people attending a musical.
Sergeant Jeff Eichenbusch from the Roseburg Police said around 7:00 p.m. the item, which looked like a pipe bomb, was found on top of a trash can by a custodian. Stewart Park Drive, between the Woolley Center and Fir Grove School, was closed from Harvard to the south entrance of the Roseburg VA as a safety precaution.
Among those evacuated were theater goers at Umpqua Actors Community Theatre.  Executive Director Melody Schwegel told News Radio 1240 KQEN that police came in to the building during the second song of “The Last Five Years”. Schwegel said everyone at UACT went to a nearby playground for a time. They left the area at around 8:00 p.m. Eichenbusch said a custodian working at Fir Grove also went home.
The unit from Central Point responded and rendered the item safe. No explosives were found inside the item and Eichenbusch said it appears that it was made for other purposes. The release said the responsible parties from nearby buildings were notified that the buildings were safe to reenter around 11:00 p.m.
