1 man is deceased and 1 woman has serious injuries after a fall near the Umpqua Hot Springs on Saturday night.
Dwes Hutson of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. the 911 center received a call reporting that a 20-year old female had fallen from a cliff in the 2000 block of Thorn Prairie Road. Hutson said the area is in the Umpqua National Forest near Toketee Ranger Station, about 60 miles east of Roseburg.
Hutson said the woman was reported to be injured and in need of medical assistance. It was also reported that a male had also fallen from the cliff and appeared to be deceased. Deputies, Search and Rescue Volunteers, U.S. Forest Service personnel and Bay Cities ambulance responded to the scene.
Deputies recovered the body of 24-year old Christian Simmons of Grants Pass. 20-year old Azrael Maujean, also of Grants Pass, was taken to Mercy Medical Center before being transferred to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland.
Hutson said initial reports indicate that both people were in the Umpqua Hot Springs area on Saturday night and became lost. Both fell approximately 70 feet from a rock cliff. On Sunday, other people in the area located the woman and called for help. Neither subject had equipment for wilderness travel, according to Hutson.
