ROSEBURG MAN JAILED FOR UNLAWFUL USE OF A MOTOR VEHICLE

A Roseburg man was jailed for unlawful use of a motor vehicle following an unusual incident on Thursday night which caused heavy damage to the vehicle taken.
A report from Roseburg Police said at about 9:45 p.m. 33-year old Sigrin Hjatalin allegedly entered someone’s car through an open window, while it was parked at Associated Buyers on Northeast Stephens. The suspect was able to break the steering lock, allowing the vehicle to turn. The man reportedly coasted the car down Winchester Street and onto the bike path on Rowe Street. The vehicle ran out of speed on the path across Deer Creek from an area called The Point.
The suspect then reportedly returned to Associated Buyers to show the vehicle’s owner where he had left the car. Then the suspect allegedly returned to the vehicle and started going through the owner’s property which was in the vehicle, while the owner was calling 911.
The suspect was detained at laser point and taken into custody. Hjaltalin was also charged with first degree criminal mischief and initially detained on $100,000 bail.
The police report said the vehicle had about $10,000 in damage following the incident.
