A fire burning in garbage brought out crews from Douglas County Fire District No. 2 on Sunday.
Battalion Chief Mark Hernandez said crews were sent to the landfill shortly after 1:30 p.m. Hernandez said the fire was burning in the upper portion of the facility and was approximately a quarter of an acre in size.

Crews were able to knock the fire down quickly and contain it to the landfill, preventing it from spreading to nearby hill sides. The fire was reported by multiple people passing by on Interstate Five, who said they saw black smoke coming from the area behind the dump.
Hernandez said DCFD2 responded with 1 brush rig, 1 fire engine, 1 water tender, and 1 command unit. They were assisted by the Douglas Forest Protective Association, County Public Works and the Sheriff’s Office.
