Last Wednesday September 23rd, Douglas County Commissioners Tom Kress and Chris Boice joined Douglas County Senior Services in recognizing and celebrating the dedicated volunteers who volunteered to support seniors throughout Douglas County at the annual Douglas County Senior Volunteer Awards Recognition Luncheon.
A county release said the luncheon recognized volunteers who serve through Douglas County Senior Services’ Senior Nutritional Services programs, which includes our Bistro Sixty congregate dining sites and Meals on Wheels programs in Sutherlin, Glendale, Winston, Glide, Yoncalla and Riddle.
Volunteers were treated to a special visit from Wildlife Safari’s ambassador cheetah, a luncheon and complimentary train rides through the park.
This last year Douglas County Senior Nutritional Services Program served 82,155 meals to seniors through the seven congregate sites in Douglas County. Volunteers donated a total of 14,586 hours of service in 2025-26.
Douglas County Senior Services Director Jeanne Wright said, “When people think of Meals on Wheels and our lunch programs, they often focus entirely on the food.” Wright said, “But as every volunteer knows, our mission is about so much more than nutrition. It’s about combatting isolation, preserving independence, and providing peace of mind to families who know their loved ones are being checked on,”
