Roseburg Public Library is hosting “Our Weird and Wild Universe” from Smithsonian Associates at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 14th.

A city release said Kimberly Arcand of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory will lead a journey through weird and wild places in the cosmos, from merely mind-bending to truly extreme.

Arcand will introduce blazars which are hyperactive, distant black holes that outshine entire galaxies, quasars powered by supermassive black holes, city-sized neutron stars, and pulsars that keep time more precisely than atomic clocks, plus some wild worlds orbiting distant suns. Arcand will discuss how these extreme objects are found and what they reveal about the cosmos.

Dr. Paul Morgan, Umpqua Community College professor and director of the UCC observatory, will lead a discussion following Arcand’s recorded presentation.

The free event is available in person only at the library, on Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard.
