On Wednesday, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners Tom Kress, Chris Boice, and Tim Freeman issued a proclamation at the weekly business meeting calling upon all citizens of Douglas County to observe this week as National Constitution Week in the county.

The proclamation was presented by Commissioner Boice, on behalf of the Board and acknowledged that, September 17th, 2026, marked the 239th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution.

As part of the presentation, Commissioner Kress said, “Today, we have the opportunity to pause and recognize something that is easy to take for granted—the framework that has guided our nation for nearly 239 years. The United States Constitution is more than a historic document displayed in classrooms, museums, or government buildings.” Kress said, “It also reminds us that our system does not depend solely on the words written on a page. It depends on people—citizens who understand their rights, respect the rights of others, participate in their communities, and remain engaged in the institutions that serve them.”

In honor of Constitution Week, the Commissioners invited the Umpqua Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to participate in the program and share the organization’s history and mission.

Roseburg’s Geneva Academy was one of the schools that participated in the program with their 11th grade civics class helping to bring the constitution’s history and principles to life through a  number of readings and comments.

Commissioner Chris Boice said, “I appreciate you all being here. I love that students are studying the constitution. I love the presentations this morning and the robust recital of the Pledge of Allegiance, it was all a blessing.”
