Umpqua Community College will celebrate a milestone more than three decades in the making with the grand opening of its new Track and Field Complex on Saturday, August 29th, at UCC’s Roseburg campus located at 1140 Umpqua College Road.
A release from UCC said the morning begins with a welcome and ribbon cutting at 8:30 a.m., followed by a pancake breakfast and the Riverhawk 5K at 9:00 a.m. Family-friendly activities will continue until 11:00 a.m. The 5K is open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities and will begin and finish on UCC’s new track.
UCC Director of Athletics and Events Craig Jackson said, “This facility represents much more than a new place to compete.” Jackson said, “It represents opportunity for our student-athletes, a stronger future for Riverhawk Athletics and a place where our broader community can come together. We’re excited to celebrate everyone whose support and commitment helped make this possible.”
The college held the new facility’s first collegiate competition on February 28 as a soft opening, marking the return of home collegiate track competition to UCC after more than three decades.
The release said the complex is designed not only to support Riverhawk student-athletes but also to expand opportunities for youth athletics, K-12 competitions, community recreation, campus events and regional gatherings.
Lead donor Shelley Briggs Loosley is credited with initiating the project and bringing the vision for a new track and field complex to life. Additional donors and supporters include the Briggs Loosley Foundation, John & Jean Loosley Charitable Foundation, Eric and Kristen Ball, Simmons Law P.C., Pat and Julee Wright, Brent and Heidi Eichman, Rachel and Jim Pokrandt, Jacky and Rick Sohn, and Mike and Lori Keller.
The facility is also supported through UCC’s five-year partnership with Rogue Credit Union and is recognized as the UCC Track and Field Complex Sponsored by Rogue Credit Union.
