First responders dealt a vehicle fire on Interstate Five southbound near Canyon Creek on Tuesday afternoon.

An Oregon State Police report said at approximately 4:40 p.m. troopers along with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Canyonville South Umpqua Fire Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation were dispatched to the incident. A commercial motor vehicle was pulling a trailer fully loaded with lumber when it caught fire as it was traveling through the Canyonville area. The truck and trailer were reported to have stopped on the right-hand shoulder before the cab became completely engulfed in flames, catching part of the hillside on fire as well.

The report said the cab was completely melted and the trailer sustained minor burning to the front, closest to the cab. Firefighters were able to extinguish the vehicle and brush fire. Diesel fuel was leaking into the surrounding area. One lane of the freeway was shut down for approximately 3.5 hours, while the truck and trailer dealt with and towed away. ODOT remained on the scene for traffic control and cleanup. All lanes of the freeway were re-opened by just after 8:10 p.m. There were no injuries and no damage to state property.
